ABA therapy 101: a simple guide for families

What is ABA therapy, in plain language?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. It helps us understand how behavior works, how environment affects it, and how learning takes place.

  • Communication: Helping children express their needs and wants.
  • Daily Living: Building skills for independence like dressing, eating, and hygiene.
  • Behavior: Reducing challenging behaviors by understanding what triggers them and teaching safer alternatives.
  • Independence: Empowering children to navigate the world on their own terms.

How ABA can help children and families

ABA isn't just about sitting at a table. It's about making life easier and more joyful for the whole family.

  • Establishing Routines: Making mornings, bedtimes, and transitions smoother.
  • Better Communication: Reducing frustration by giving children tools to say what they mean.
  • Flexibility: Helping children adapt to changes in plans or new environments.

Common myths vs reality

Myth: ABA turns children into robots.

Reality: Modern ABA focuses on teaching skills that help children express their unique personalities, not changing who they are.

Myth: ABA is only for severe behaviors.

Reality: ABA helps with a wide range of skills, from making friends to learning to tie shoes.

Myth: It happens at a desk all day.

Reality: Much of our therapy happens during play, in the community, or as part of daily routines.

Who ABA may be helpful for

ABA is often recommended for children who need support with communication, social skills, or adaptive behaviors. It is highly individualized, meaning the program is built around the specific needs and goals of your child, whether they need a lot of support or just a little boost.

How ABA fits with speech, OT, and school

We believe in a team approach. ABA is not a replacement for Speech Therapy or Occupational Therapy (OT). Instead, we collaborate with other providers and teachers to ensure consistency. If your child is learning a sign in Speech, we practice it in ABA. If they are working on handwriting in OT, we can support that during art time.

What to do if you’re curious but unsure

It's normal to have questions. If you're not sure if ABA is the right path, the best first step is a low-pressure conversation. We can listen to your story and give you honest feedback on whether we think we can help.
