ABA vs. Other Therapies: How They Work Together
Parents often wonder if they have to choose between ABA, Speech, and Occupational Therapy. The truth is, these therapies work best when they work together.
The Role of ABA
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) focuses on understanding behavior and motivation. We break down complex skills into small, teachable steps and use positive reinforcement to help children learn new skills and reduce challenging behaviors.
ABA and Speech Therapy
While Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are the experts in the mechanics of speech and language structure, ABA helps with the motivation to communicate.
- Speech: Teaches how to form sounds and words.
- ABA: Creates opportunities and motivation to use those words in functional ways.
ABA and Occupational Therapy (OT)
OT focuses on sensory processing, fine motor skills, and daily living activities. ABA complements this by reinforcing the skills learned in OT during daily routines.
- OT: Helps a child develop the strength and coordination to hold a spoon.
- ABA: Uses reinforcement to encourage using the spoon during every meal.
Collaboration is Key
At Mint, we believe in a multidisciplinary approach. We actively collaborate with your child's other providers to ensure consistency. If your SLP introduces a picture exchange system, we incorporate it into our sessions. If your OT suggests a sensory diet, we respect those needs.
You don't have to choose. Your child benefits most when their entire care team is on the same page.
