How to Talk to Your Child About Starting Therapy

Starting therapy is a big change. Frame it positively to help your child feel excited and safe.

Focus on Play

"A new friend is coming over to play with your Legos!" For younger children, therapy looks and feels like play, so describing it that way is honest and reassuring.

Highlight Strengths

"You are so good at building, and Sarah is going to help us build even bigger towers together." Focus on what they can do, rather than what they need to "fix."

Keep it Simple

You don't need to over-explain. "This is a special teacher who helps kids learn new games." Short, simple explanations are often best.

Validate Feelings

If your child is nervous, that's okay. "It's okay to feel shy. You can sit with me until you're ready." Let them know their feelings are valid.
