ABA and speech therapy together: how to make them work as a team

ABA and speech are different (and that’s good)

Speech therapy focuses on communication skills and motor planning for speech. ABA focuses on how skills show up in daily life—getting your child to use communication consistently across routines and people.

What great collaboration looks like

  • Shared targets: the same 3–5 functional words/signs/pictures.
  • Practice everywhere: ABA helps generalize what speech teaches.
  • Aligned prompting: everyone uses the same cueing approach.
  • Consistent reinforcement: communication gets a quick “payoff.”

If you’re stuck between plans

It’s common to hear different suggestions from different providers. Ask each clinician what they’re prioritizing and why. Your team can usually build a shared plan where speech targets are practiced during real routines like meals, play, and transitions.

Questions to ask both providers

  • What are the top 3 communication goals right now?
  • How will we know it’s working (what data or examples)?
  • How should we prompt at home to avoid confusion?
  • What should we practice daily for 5 minutes?
