Helping with homework using ABA strategies
Make homework predictable (not a negotiation)
Homework becomes a daily battle when it’s unclear, too long, or feels impossible. ABA strategies focus on structure: clear expectations, small chunks, and reinforcement for effort.
Try the “first/then + timer” routine
- First: 5 minutes of homework (or 3 problems).
- Then: a short break (movement, snack, preferred activity).
- Timer: helps homework have a clear end point.
Reduce demand without removing the skill
If your child is stuck, reduce the load: fewer problems, larger print, short writing responses, or doing one step together. The goal is building tolerance and independence over time.
Teach a safe “help” and “break” request
A lot of refusal is communication. When children can ask for help or a break, the need for avoidance behaviors often decreases.
