Supporting your child during school breaks and summer: structure without burnout
School breaks and summer can bring relief from school stress—but also a lot of dysregulation. Without the predictable structure of school, some kids struggle with transitions, screen time boundaries, sleep, and behavior. ABA can help you build a simple summer plan that protects regulation and keeps skills moving forward.
Why breaks can be hard
- Routine disruption: fewer predictable cues for what happens next.
- More unstructured time: harder for kids who struggle with initiation and planning.
- Sleep shifts: later bedtimes can increase irritability and behavior.
- Less support: fewer school-based services and structured activities.
A simple daily structure (example)
Many families do best with a light “backbone” routine: morning routine → active time → lunch → quiet time → choice time → dinner → wind down. You can keep it flexible while still predictable.
ABA strategies that help during breaks
- Visual schedules: a simple plan for the day (4–8 items).
- Choice within boundaries: “pool or sprinkler,” “park or backyard.”
- Planned breaks: movement, sensory input, and calm time before escalation.
- Short skill reps: quick practice of goals embedded into routines.
- Screen-time structure: clear start/stop cues and “first/then” tradeoffs.
Protect the “big three”: sleep, food, and regulation
Summer plans are more successful when families prioritize consistent sleep routines, predictable mealtimes/snacks, and daily regulation activities. These reduce baseline stress and make behavior more manageable.
What progress can look like
Progress may be fewer meltdowns on “nothing planned” days, smoother transitions away from screens, or your child practicing independence skills regularly without battles.
