The Essential IEP Meeting Checklist

IEP meetings can be overwhelming, but preparation is your superpower. Here is a checklist to help you feel confident and ready to advocate for your child.

Before the Meeting

  • Review the current IEP draft. Request a copy 48 hours in advance.
  • Write down your top 3 concerns. Keep the focus on these priorities.
  • Gather recent progress reports from private therapists (ABA, Speech, OT).
  • Invite a support person. You don't have to go alone.
  • Prepare a 'Student Profile'—a one-page sheet about your child's strengths and interests.

During the Meeting

  • Bring a notepad and pen. Take notes or ask to record the meeting.
  • Ask for clarification. If they use an acronym you don't know, ask what it means.
  • Focus on 'SMART' goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound.
  • Ask how progress will be measured and how often you will receive reports.
  • Take a break if you need one. Emotions can run high; it's okay to step out.

After the Meeting

  • Review the final document carefully before signing.
  • Send a follow-up email thanking the team and summarizing key points.
  • Update your private therapy team on any new school goals.
  • Celebrate! You advocated for your child, and that's a big win.
