Bedtime routines for autistic children: calmer nights, fewer battles
Start with predictability, not perfection
Bedtime usually breaks down when the routine feels unclear or too long. ABA strategies focus on making bedtime predictable, shorter, and reinforced.
A simple bedtime routine structure
- Same order: bath → pajamas → snack → books → lights out.
- Visual support: 4–6 pictures your child can follow.
- Clear end: “2 books, then bed.”
- Reinforce success: praise + small reward for following steps.
Common bedtime pain points (and what to try)
If your child leaves the bed repeatedly, you may need a consistent return routine. If they resist pajamas or brushing teeth, break the task into smaller steps and reinforce each step at first.
When sleep issues need extra support
If your child is sleeping very little, snoring heavily, or waking frequently, talk with your pediatrician. ABA can support routines, but medical factors sometimes need attention too.
